आधुनिक युग मे फोटोग्राफी का अत्यधिक महत्त्व है। इसमें लेशमात्र भी संदेह नही है कि फोटोग्राफी की सहायता के बिना अनेक आधुनिक वैज्ञानिक तथा औद्योगिक आविष्कार अधूरे ही रह जात। विज्ञान तथा उद्योग के अतिरिक्त सामाजिक एवं सांस्कृतिक उत्सवों आदि से सम्बन्धित ऐसे अनेक अवसर जीवन मे आते हैं जिनको हम यादगार के तौर पर स्थायी बना लेना चाहते हैं। फोटोग्राफी की सहायता से हम उन क्षणों को हमेशा के लिये स्थायी बना लेते हैं जो फिर कभी लौट के नहीं आते।
